Global Sociology in Turbulent Times
What is the role of sociology at a time when distrust in science is being actively promoted, academic freedom is under threat, wealth and information are increasingly concentrated, and climate change, war, authoritarianism and deepening inequalities are reshaping societies across the globe?
The theme of the XXI ISA World Congress of Sociology — “Global Sociology in Turbulent Times” — is an invitation to think globally about these transformations, while bringing into the conversation the experiences, knowledge and perspectives of those most affected by them.
Global sociology is both an analytical perspective and a project: building bridges between North and South, East and West, academia and society, theory and practice. Feminist, decolonial, subaltern and post-Western perspectives have already transformed our discipline. The challenges we face make this dialogue more necessary than ever.
From 4–10 July 2027, sociologists from around the world will gather in Gwangju, South Korea — a city marked by a historic struggle for democracy — to ask how sociology can help us understand, challenge and imagine alternatives to these turbulent times.
